Srinagar December 14; While appreciating Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent review of the distribution of government advertisements to media houses in Jammu & Kashmir, it is important to address a significant yet overlooked concern raised by the news media fraternity of J&K. While the review aims to bring transparency and fairness to the process, it would have been even more commendable had the Chief Minister also taken cognizance of emerging newspapers that have worked tirelessly to attain eligibility for empanelment.
These fresh newspapers have consistently gone above and beyond the prescribed requirements, maintaining a commitment to quality journalism and producing content that adheres to the principles of fairness, ethics, and journalistic integrity. Despite their unwavering dedication and sustained efforts, these publications are yet to be empaneled by the Information Department of J&K. This lack of empanelment, unfortunately, excludes them from access to government advertisements, a critical source of financial stability for small and upcoming media outlets.
This exclusion raises valid concerns about the inclusivity and fairness of the current media policy, particularly when it comes to accommodating new and diverse voices. Many of these fresh newspapers provide a platform for underrepresented perspectives and amplify voices that are often overlooked by mainstream media. Their exclusion not only hinders their growth but also undermines the principles of a pluralistic media ecosystem that is vital for a democratic society.
The news media fraternity of J&K has consistently highlighted the need for equitable treatment of all publications, especially those that uphold high journalistic standards and serve as a voice for the marginalized. Supporting such publications is crucial to fostering diversity, encouraging competition, and strengthening the regional media landscape.
By extending empanelment to deserving newspapers, the government can ensure that public funds are allocated equitably, promoting inclusivity and encouraging journalistic excellence. Furthermore, such measures would demonstrate the government’s commitment to an independent and thriving press in Jammu & Kashmir.
It is hoped that the Chief Minister will revisit the media policy framework and address these concerns to ensure that all eligible newspapers, particularly the newer and smaller ones striving to make a meaningful impact, are given their rightful place in the empanelment process.
