Over 100 Women Cycle 67 Kms from Baramulla to Kaman Aman Setu
Baramulla, November 24: The Jhelum Women’s Cycling Rally, a remarkable event organized by the Dagger Division in collaboration with the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department and the District Administration of Baramulla, unfolded on November 24, 2024. This year’s fourth edition saw an inspiring turnout of 105 women cyclists, who embarked on a challenging 67-kilometer journey from Baramulla to Kaman Aman Setu, Uri.
The rally, themed “Drug-Free Kashmir,” witnessed participants across three age categories conquer the arduous terrain of Jammu & Kashmir. The event not only showcased the physical prowess of the women cyclists but also highlighted their determination to promote a healthy and drug-free society.
“We’ve been training for a month, and it was all worth it,” said one of the young participants, expressing her pride in being part of this spectacular event.
The District Administration of Baramulla, in conjunction with the J&K Tourism Department, played a crucial role in the smooth execution of the rally. Senior officials from the J&K Sports Department, Police, and NGOs were also present to encourage the participants.
Major General Paranvir Singh Punia, SM, VSM, GOC of Dagger Division, and Brigadier Rajat Mohan Bhatt, PhD, Commander of the Baramulla Brigade, graced the occasion as chief guests, along with other civil and military dignitaries.
The rally offered participants a unique opportunity to explore the picturesque landscapes of the Baramulla District, cycling through lush green valleys and along the winding Jhelum River. The event not only tested the cyclists’ endurance but also provided them with a chance to connect with nature and immerse themselves in the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The finish point at Kaman Aman Setu, a historic trade route between India and Pakistan, hosted a vibrant cultural show featuring the “Strings of Baramulla” band of the Chinar YUVA Centre. The performance was followed by a captivating display of traditional dance and music, including Bhangra and Rouf. The event was further enlivened by popular Radio Baramulla RJs who served as the Masters of Ceremony.
Major General Punia commended all participants for their enthusiasm and dedication, emphasizing the event’s significance in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and a drug-free society. He also highlighted the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering peace and development in the region.
The Jhelum Women’s Cycle Rally has undoubtedly set a new benchmark for sporting events in the region, inspiring the youth of Kashmir to pursue their passions and contribute to the development of their community.
