Bandipora, 04-Mar: A potential flash flood disaster in Baraub village, located in the Tulail Tehsil of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, was successfully averted thanks to the swift and decisive action of the Indian Army’s 51 Rashtriya Rifles (RR). The timely intervention prevented what could have been a catastrophic situation for the local residents.
The crisis unfolded on the intervening night of March 3 and 4, when villagers noticed a sudden surge in water levels in the Naraub Nala, a local water channel. The rise in water was attributed to heavy snowfall in the region, which caused a blockage in the riverbed, raising fears of a flash flood. Panic-stricken villagers immediately alerted the Indian Army, seeking urgent assistance.
Responding promptly to the distress call, personnel from the 51 Rashtriya Rifles rushed to the site with snow clearance equipment. They worked through the night to assist in the evacuation of families from vulnerable areas, relocating them to safer locations. The Army’s quick response helped calm the anxious villagers and ensured their safety.
By the following morning, the threat of the Nala altering its course due to the snow blockage had escalated. However, the Indian Army, equipped with a dozer, continued its efforts to clear the accumulated snow and channelize the excess water back into the river. Their tireless work throughout the day successfully mitigated the risk of flooding, averting a potential disaster.
The local residents expressed immense relief and gratitude toward the Indian Army for their timely and effective intervention. “The Army’s swift action saved us from a major disaster. We are deeply thankful for their efforts,” said a villager.
This incident highlights the critical role played by the Indian Army in safeguarding lives and property in remote and vulnerable regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Their proactive approach and dedication to the welfare of the local population continue to earn them the trust and appreciation of the communities they serve.
