Bandipora, 20-Dec: Asiya Akbar, a 35-year-old woman from Nasoo village in Bandipora, is gaining attention for her rooftop farming efforts where she grows vegetables and mushrooms.

This innovative approach has contributed to her family’s income, as she earns over Rs. 40,000 per month from the crops she cultivates on her rooftop.

While speaking to media Asiya Akbar stated that she began mushroom cultivation four years ago, exploring its potential alongside vegetables. Originally from Veernag, and during a visit to Kupwara with the Territorial Army, she was encouraged to start a business.

“That’s when I decided on mushroom cultivation. With guidance from the Agriculture Department, I received support from the local community,” she said.

She added that with fewer government job opportunities for educated women, farming at home could provide a sustainable alternative. “Growing vegetables and mushrooms at home offers a way for women to support themselves,” she said.
