Srinagar, INB, 04-Aug; The Kashmir Broadcast Equipment Holders Association (KBEHA) has welcomed the Jammu and Kashmir High Court’s decision to take cognizance of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Dr. M M Shuja, a senior journalist, against fake journalists and unregistered social media sites.
The PIL seeks to curb the growing menace of fake journalists and unregistered social media sites operating in the region, which have been causing harm to the reputation of genuine journalists and spreading misinformation. Dr. Shuja’s initiative has been hailed as a significant step towards maintaining the integrity of journalism in the region.
The KBEHA, an association of empaneled post-production houses with Doordarshan.
led by President Ansar Amin, General Secretary Altaf Marazi, along with other members has been advocating for the rights of broadcast equipment holders in the region. The association has expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision.
“We appreciate the court’s prompt action against fake journalists and unregistered social media sites, which have been causing harm to the reputation of genuine journalists and spreading misinformation,” said Shouib Nasir, Media Spokesperson of KBEHA. “This is a significant step towards maintaining the integrity of journalism in the region.”
KBEHA has been working with the government on various projects from time to time, but the presence of unauthorized portals has tarnished the professional system in the region. “We are annoyed to see how the government is endorsing these unauthorized portals, despite our repeated requests to take action against them,” said Nasir.
“The government’s endorsement of these portals has not only legitimized their operations but also encouraged others to follow suit, further damaging the credibility of genuine journalists and media professionals,” added Nasir.
KBEHA has urged the government to regularize the journalists and post-production facilities in the region, ensuring that only genuine and qualified professionals are recognized and allowed to operate. The association has also emphasized the need for a fully equipped studio with necessary equipment for content production.
Meanwhile, KBEHA members have expressed gratitude to Dr. Shuja for taking up the issue to the court for taking swift action. The association has vowed to continue fighting for the rights of its members and upholding the principles of journalism.
